India boasts an extensive network of approximately 14,500 km of navigable waterways, encompassing rivers, canals, backwaters, and creeks. The nation has designated 111 of these as National Waterways (NWs) under the National Waterways Act, 2016. Remarkably, freight movement on National Waterway 1 has surged by an impressive 88% since 2016-17. As of FY-2021-22, cargo traffic through operational national waterways reached 96.31 MMT, with an ambitious target of 200 MMT by 2030 under the Maritime India Vision 2030. The Central Sector Scheme (CSS) actively supports the development of inland waterways, offering 100% financial assistance to Northeastern States, further enhancing investment opportunities in this thriving sector.
