In rural areas in India, major part of the energy requirement is in domestic sector and is met by fuel wood and cattle dung cake. This is not a healthy practice, which needs to be changed to improve rural economy as also the quality of life. In this context biogas is an efficient domestic fuel which keeps the house and environment clean unlike burning of wood or dung cake which is associated with environmental pollution. In addition, biogas is a decentralised system. As a result, household becomes self sufficient on domestic energy requirement. The Biogas centre located at IIT-Kharagpur has capacity and past 25 years experience to provide training to the villagers and in setting up domestic plants in rural areas. The research team has also conducted research work for generation of biogas by using various wastes. In this proposal, it is proposed to set-up few biogas plants in rural villages, arrange awareness and training program, so that benefits are visible to villagers. The project fund being applied for will be primarily utilized for setting up domestic plants in the selective villages of nearby blocks of IIT-Kharagpur, so that the villagers can obtain clean cooking fuel along with biofertilisers. Successful setting up of Biogas Plant- Sponsored by CSR Partner, NBCFDC [National Backward Classes Finance and Development Corporation - Government of India Undertaking, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment] In rural areas of India to meet the energy requirement in domestic sector in an environment friendly manner and also to improve the rural economy as well as quality of life, production and use of biogas from waste materials is a promising option. To demonstrate this idea, National Backward Classes Finance & Development Corporation [NBCFDC], New Delhi sanctioned a project to IIT Khargapur under its CSR program to construct fifteen [15] number of domestic Bio-Gas plants, using different waste material in rural areas of Kharagpur Sub-Division, Paschim Medinipur and Purba Medinipur [WB] and nearby areas of IIT Kharagpur. The beneficiaries are from village of Gobindapur, Janakibarh, Amda, Patashpur-II, Panikotor, Kundra, Kasba-Sabang, Basantapur, Tara, Chandrakona Road, Kiamacha etc. This project was undertaken through the initiative of CSR cell of AA&IR by the Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Kharagpur under CSR program under the leadership of Prof. B. C. Meikap and his team. 15 numbers of Biogas Production Plants using different waste material successfully constructed and handed over the operational plants to the beneficiaries. All the working 15 plants were inspected by the officials of NBFDC and inaugurated by them.
