The purpose of this project is to improve the income of farmers from the agri-waste and concurrently create micro and small businesses on waste to wealth value chain for rural youth. A farmer gets about 2-4 lakhs of revenue from an acre banana crop. After each harvest, the stem is redundant and usually discarded, burned or ploughed back into the soil. Andhra Pradesh alone produces 1482 lakhs stems per year from 60,000 hectares of banana cultivation. With the available technologies, several products of value can be prepared. An acre of land yields 500 kilos of fiber from 1000 stems. Each kilo of fiber costs about Rs. 100. An additional income of about Rs. 50000 for the farmer or an entrepreneur from an acre. With Banana fibers, textile fabrics, window blinds, curtains, table sheets, door mats and baskets are made. Along with fiber, juice [sap] is recovered with extraction. Banana sap is a wonderful mordant used to dye the fabric materials-cotton and banana fibers and a suitable alternative to harmful chemical mordants. The textile industry buys sap at Rs. 3 -5 per litre. Around 12000 litres [40percentage of 50 tons] per acre, which is Rs. 36000. Pulp, another byproduct from banana stem, is a raw material for paper industry. This pulp can also be converted into vermicompost. Each kilo of vermicompost is about Rs. 5-8. One acre of pseudo-stem gives about 18 tons of pulp which is about 5*18000=90,000. In total, a farmerorentrepreneur can get Rs. 176000 per acre of agro-waste.

Project Impact

1. Ecological Impact- a. Minimization of burning of waste from banana farms. b. Availability of sufficient vermicompost prepared from banana stem pulp for organic farming c. Sap as suitable replacement for chemical mordants in textile dying industry where the chemical effluents are nuisance to the ecosystem. 2. Social Impact- a. Providing additional income to the farmer. About 10000-15000 per acre just for stems rather than burning. If the farmer himselforherself extracts fiber and markets it, heorshe get about 50000 per month from once acre. If they handle all the value chains-fiber, sap and pulp, they will be able to get about 2 lakhs per acre. It is almost like ‘doubling their income by switching them to enterprise mode. b. Creates micro and small-scale industry in rural setup which youth in the villages can easily take up. Since, the investment is very minimal, about 1 lakh for fiber extraction, 50000 for weaving of banana fiber, 20000 for vermicompost, the youth can form SHGs or cooperatives and create banana waste to wealth business value chain. As a spin-off, the migration of youth to the cities is controlled and add wealth to local economy. 3. Economic Impact- a. Purchase power in rural regions improve. b. Creates alternative to silk. Banana fiber can be woven similar to silk and create sarees, shirts and suiting. c. Reduces burden on cotton imports as banana fiber has potential to replace cotton in large number of products. Our reachout through this initiative would be 10 centres with each centre catering to 02 villages. The annual impact from this inititave would be 40 youth directly and 200 members indirectly.
